A smooth ride starts with a smarter rental experience

Boedelbak is an iconic name in the Netherlands with trailer rental services at over 550 locations, offering a convenient and reliable solution for individuals and businesses needing extra transportation capacity on the fly or the near future. Boedelbak is so well known that the word ‘Boedelbak’ is featured in the Dutch dictionary.

A quick, easy and improved process for all parties

Before the redesign, clients had to book a trailer by either visiting the location physically or booking online and then completing the reservation process in person. Attendants at these locations, often gas stations, had to handle additional administrative tasks, causing delays for clients who had to wait for their reservations to be processed. The new website enables users to make rental booking directly into the system so attendants only have to do a simple check and hand out the keys. We designed the booking process to be as quick and simple as possible and reduced it into 4 clear steps:

  1. Choose a time and place
  2. Choose trailer
  3. Enter your data
  4. Confirm and pay

Choose the right time and place

The most important step for a user is picking the right location, day and time. Research shows that most users have a pretty clear idea of when they need their trailer, and since there are over 550+ locations there is bound to be a location near you. Choosing a location, date and time all happens above the fold on the homepage, to make the rental process as quick and easy as possible.

The right location for you

The location picker shows the nearest location based on your address, zip-code or city, and gives a preview of it’s features. Each option shows the distance from the entered location, the address and the payment mode. Since Boedelbak is going to a transition where some locations are online-only, offline-only, or are in a trial where users can book and pick up the trailer using the Boedelbak app.

Choosing the right trailer

All key information is now displayed directly on cards of the trailers, allowing users to compare trailer features easily and make an informed decision at the moment when they need it most. Clients can check availability at any location, see at what time a trailer will become available if it’s currently reserved, and compare trailer properties side by side. This ensures they always have the right information at the most critical point—when they are deciding which trailer best suits their needs.

Finishing your reservation

After choosing the right time, location and trailer, the users have to enter their information. We designed what we call a ‘receipt’ that is always visible on desktop and expandable at the bottom on mobile. The receipt makes sure users don’t have to go back an forth to different pages during the registration flow to make sure what time, location trailer they chose, one of the most common reasons users abandon the booking process.

Making a chore more light hearted

Moving houses, clearing your garden waste, moving furniture around… let’s be honest; the usual chores people use a trailer for aren’t exactly ‘fun’. This is why a visual style was developed to reflect Boedelbak’s approachable and practical identity, to make things a bit more lighthearted and cheerful. The style was adapted into the website, promotional items, and later the Boedelbak App.

Because it is important to show the dimensions and capabilities of each different type of Boedelbak, a 2.5D illustration style was designed. This enabled us to show what each Boedelbak could possibly be used for in a simple way, which would be harder if the illustrations were made in 2D.

Because there were no uniform photo’s available for each type of Boedelbak (there are 11 different types available for rent), I illustrated every Boedelbak type in a side and top-down 2.5D style. This makes each Boedelbak and it’s specific characteristics and size easily distinguishable from another, even when viewed in small sizes.

For a unified experience the style is also applied to other visual elements, like animations, buttons and other UI elements, creating consistency and making the process of renting a Boedelbak more than just a chore. Many illustrations were made for the website, explainer video’s and promotional materials.

The success of this approach extended beyond the project itself—the design system became the foundation for the redesign of the Pak ’n Bak website. Pak ’n Bak, a similar trailer rental business owned by parent company Spuigroep, required a system that reflected its unique brand while maintaining consistency with its counterpart.

Building on the design system established with Boedelbak, we expanded the design system by making a new theme in Pak ’n Bak’s style. The design system was updated in such a way that components and pages could be interchanged between Boedelbak and Pak ‘n Bak on the fly, making it easier and faster for developers to make the Pak ‘n Bak website by using the Boedelbak website as a baseline.
